In contrast to tooth decay and gum disease, an increasingly common problem is teeth which simply wear down or dissolve away to varying extents as time passes (figures 1, 2 and 3).

As a result of one or more of the following causes, teeth may become short and unattractive as well as rough or sensitive (figures 4 to 8):

Figure 4	Abrasion: excessive rubbing of enamel and dentine from, for example, tooth brushing or porcelain crowns
Figure 5	Attrition: through tooth grinding and clenching which normally occurs at night

Erosion: from eating acidic foods and drinks (figures 6 and 7) or having stomach acid problems (figure 8)

At the London Tooth Wear Centre, an evidence-based approach to comprehensive care is offered.

In this regard, advice may be sought from medical and dental colleagues in related specialties.

An early diagnosis is essential so that simpler treatment, including monitoring and prevention, may be provided.

On occasion, more complex treatment may be necessary to restore satisfactory function and a pleasing appearance.
